Office Desk Decor

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but when you work 50 hours a week,  it seems like the office is your second home. It always feels a little more welcoming when you get in to see a space that you’ve made personal and functional for yourself. After all— you’re going to be there a while…

That being said it is important to remember that this is still your company’s office and not your home, so keep things tasteful and be considerate of others when selecting your décor.  Below are the items I’ve placed on my own desk to help work flow easier and make anyone from clients to coworkers feel welcome.

Express Yourself: I love conversation pieces—be it items for your home or an awesome fashion tee to rock around town. Victoria Secret water bottles are great for staying hydrated while sitting at a desk all day. The current one I have suggests “I’ll Work Out Tomorrow” and has proven that to be true for a little too long. Same goes for my cute Kate Spade, “Eat Cake For Breakfast Coffee Mug” that stays more full that my water bottle half the time. My Biff gave it to me for Christmas and since Kate and quality go hand in hand, it’s lasted and made me hungry for more than a couple years now. Finally, I have a hanging inspirational quote hanging above my coat holder with the statement “Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful”, to remind everyone in the office that originals are always better than copy and we all bring a unique aspect to the team.

Warm up: It’s impossible for everyone to be comfortable every day and office temperatures are sometimes uncontrollable, so having a sweater to throw over you or a cute blanket will keep you warm while others opt to stay cool.

Take Note: Obviously you are going to need pens and paper. Even in a world gone digital, I still find myself scribbling to-do’s, memos and yes, even taking notes during a meeting. Instead of the boring spiral notebook, opt for fun and fashionable ones that are only $3 at Target! I feel like I should put up a warning when directing anyone to target…especially to the particular section they’re in. WARNING: You will leave with MUCH MORE than what you actually came in for when entering a target shopping center. Don’t forget a pencil holder ( see you already added an item!) Another great find— I swear I’m not doing this on purpose— are the $1 file folders. If you are really organized like I pretend to be, choose different colors for different clients to have easy access to the documents you need.

Keep it Clean:  Purell went the extra mile in not only sending over their new seasonal scents and jelly wraps ( really check them out they’re awesome), but also sent over the large pump of their hand sanitizer that fit perfectly on my desk. Before I’m labeled as a “germaphobe”- I’ll do it for you- I am one. But honestly it really is good hygiene and considerate to have this available for clients, coworkers and yourself. Spread love not ebola—side note I actually looked up if Purell kills Ebola ha ha and….apparently I’m not the only person who asked: Question Numero Uno!

Umbrella- ella- ella – eh – eh –eh
Props to anyone who can stay the world umbrella and NOT think of that song. Keep an umbrella at or in your desk for unexpected showers you could walk out to when the weather man says different.

The Smell of Success:   This one is a little tricky because you want to be courteous to your coworkers. If you have your own office or are sectioned off like I am, pick up a mini diffuser at Pier 1 Imports to keep this fresh. I say mini because a larger one typically provides coverage for an entire room and you don’t want the scent to be over powering. Select a clean smelling one and avoid florals - the one I have is crisp bamboo. The reason I’ve suggested Pier 1 is because I have YET to find another brand that works as effectively and at a good price.

Plan for it: Two planners may seem eccentric but for me it’s vital. One is in the version of dry erase board I change week by week to keep up with deadlines or meetings that pop up. The other is your normal purse sized planner that is portable and more permanent for reoccurring meetings, reports and dates. Again Target or my favorite pronunciation – Tar- je’, is the best place to find these items!

Photo Frames:  Choose cute and fun photo frames that go with a theme or just patterns you like. It’s more important what you choose to put in the frame, than the frame itself. Plus having photos of friends and family is a great way to remind you and your co-workers you have a life.

What's on your desk?
